The Diefenbunker

A huge four-storey bunker, buried deep under a hillside and meant to house crucial elements of Canadian government in a nuclear war, The Diefenbunker is Canada's Cold War Museum and is one of the most exceptional museums in Ottawa. It is located 30 minutes west of Ottawa and is well worth the drive.
A National Historic Site of Canada, this underground nuclear bunker was built in secrecy during the Cold War to house top government and military officials in the event of an attack. Today the Museum provides a startling glimpse into Cold War history. For the first time in the Diefenbunker’s history, visitors can roam the rooms and halls of the formerly top-secret nuclear bunker on their own. This past summer the museum launched an interactive audio/video guide which leads visitors, with the help of a map and marked paths, through the maze-like National Historic Site.
The Museum is named for John Diefenbaker, Canada's Prime Minister at the time of the bunker's construction. The Museum includes 1960s era government rooms, living quarters and cryptographic areas. The bunker is over 100,000 square feet, four storeys underground and is located in Carp, on the western border of the city of Ottawa. Visitors get to tour the Prime Minister's suite and War Cabinet Room. The bunker houses a CBC radio studio that would have broadcast to any survivors of a nuclear attack - Hello, is anyone out there. Take the money and run! A Bank of Canada vault is built into the bunker. Cold war-themed movies are shown monthly - popcorn included.
